More Progress

More Progress

Overall, Sam is still doing really well, and he continues to make progress.  When we called for an update this morning before Laura left to visit him, they had already removed his catheter and one of his heart lines, and they were planning on removing the bulk of his chest tubes and lines.  By noon, they were all gone, and the only lines he now has in him are a neck IV and an arterial line in his thigh.

Sam has been opening his eyes, but is still pretty groggy.  Also, they replaced his NG tube today and have been trying to start him on regular feeds.  So far, he’s having a little problem keeping this down.  He has always had a bit of a reflux problem, so we’re not really worried about this yet.  Besides, he’s still doing great with everything else; the doctors are all really impressed with his numbers and progress, but they’re going to keep working on the feed issue.  Something else that I was excited to hear about is that Sam was sitting up in an infant seat today!  Go Sam!

One thing I need to remind myself is that Sam just had complex, open-heart surgery only five days ago!  He has been doing so well that when he has what appears to be little setbacks like the feeding thing, I’m tempted to start worrying.  Somehow I don’t think that I would be doing this well if it were me… I don’t think I’d want to eat either.  So, I’m trying to learn to just relax and know that Sam is in good hands and he’s going to be just fine.

Meanwhile, Max (aka “The Bean”) is recovering nicely from his cold.  There were hardly any sniffles or coughs today.  I think quick healing may run in these boys’ blood!

Hi George and Laura and boys,
So happy to hear that things are going okay for Sam. He has been in our prayers, as well as you, and we know that he will improve everyday. Trish keeps us up to date and shows pictures of the boys whenever she receives them from you. You are both remarkable people, and may you all be blessed with health and happiness.
    Love,
    Trish’s Mom and Dad
