New Traditions

Super Bowl XLIV was the first one that I got to watch with both of my boys.  During the previous Super Bowl, Sam was still in the hospital, so I watched most of the game with Max in my lap, while Sam watched in the cardiac ICU (when we visited him that day, I made sure the game was on before we left, and told the nurse to make sure Sam was rooting for Pittsburgh).  It was so hard to enjoy the game knowing that Sam was basically alone in the hospital and actually feeling a bit guilty watching it with Max.

[singlepic id=94 w=320 h=240 float=right] This year was so much better.  Sam was home with us, and better yet, he was as healthy as can be after having his surgery.  Having both my boys with me meant so much.  I didn’t get to watch much of the game with them because of bed time, but the time we had was great.  Now I know they’re too young to care about the game, and it will be several years before they know what’s going on, but I’m looking forward to this becoming a tradition.  I remember how fun it was watching the big game with my father and brothers, and I want Sam and Max to have that.  No matter who they root for (as long as it’s not Dallas) we’ll have fun watching the game together.

Yes, I look forward to many years of this.  It might sound a bit cliche, but watching the big game with my sons is just one more of those things I’ll be able to enjoy as a father.
